Most preparedness content is written to sell. I write for a parent in an apartment, a renter, or a retiree who wants to be ready for a bad day and does not want to waste money. Here is exactly how each recommendation is made.
1. Safety comes first. I start with what protects life and health, then what is practical, then price. I do not cover firearms, ammunition or weapons of any kind.
2. I check more than one source. For every product I read the current manufacturer specifications and certifications, plus two or three independent sources. Medical and safety guidance comes from bodies such as the CDC, EPA, Ready.gov and the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care, and I link to them.
3. I say when I have used something, and when I have not. When I can, I use a product on a camping or hiking trip or at home. If I have used it, the article says so. If my verdict rests on specifications and other people’s testing, the article says that instead. I never claim a test that did not happen.
4. How I break a tie. When two products are close, I choose by safety certifications and safety record first, then verified buyer reviews, then price.
5. What the verdicts mean.
- Buy: it does what it claims, I would trust it for my own household, and the price is fair for what you get.
- Mixed: it works, with a limit you should know about before you buy. The article names that limit and who it suits.
- Skip: the cost does not match the usefulness, the quality is not good enough to rely on, or the company does not stand behind it.
6. Every scenario gets a budget pick and a premium pick. A real recommendation for a real budget.
7. How the site earns money. Some links are affiliate links. If you buy through one, I may earn a commission at no cost to you. A commission never changes a verdict. I recommend products that pay me nothing when they are the better or safer buy.
8. Corrections are public. When a product changes, a program ends, or I get something wrong, I update the article and note what changed.
